Aspects are the angles that planets form with one another in the sky. When two planets sit at a particular angle, astrologers see a special relationship between them. AstroNow calculates these angles for the current sky and shows which aspects are active right now.
There are several classic aspect types. A conjunction happens when planets are almost at the same point in the sky. An opposition is an angle of about 180 degrees, with the planets facing each other. The trine (about 120 degrees) and the sextile (about 60 degrees) are traditionally seen as harmonious, while the square (about 90 degrees) is seen as tense. The small allowance around an exact angle is called the orb.
Because planets move at different speeds, aspects are always forming and separating. Aspects involving the Moon shift quickly, within a day, while aspects between the slow outer planets can last for weeks or months. That is why a live snapshot of the sky is more useful than a static table.

- What does it mean when an aspect is "exact"?
- It means the angle between the two planets equals the aspect's defined angle precisely at that instant — 90.0° for a square, for example. Shortly before and after, the aspect is still "in orb" and counted as active, just not at its exact peak.
- What is an orb?
- The orb is the small margin of degrees allowed around an aspect's exact angle before AstroNow still counts it as active. It is why an aspect shows as active for a span of time rather than a single instant.
- Which aspects does AstroNow track?
- Five major aspects — conjunction, sextile, square, trine, and opposition — plus one minor aspect, the quincunx. These six cover the angles traditionally treated as significant in Western astrology.
- Why do Moon aspects appear and disappear so quickly?
- The Moon moves roughly 13° per day, far faster than any other body, so it slides through an aspect's orb in hours. Aspects between the slow outer planets can stay in orb for weeks or months instead.
- Are "positive" and "negative" aspect labels a scientific classification?
- No. The harmonious/tense/neutral labels reflect a long-standing interpretive tradition, not a measured property of the angle itself. We show them because they are part of how aspects are conventionally read, not as a factual claim.
