The dashboard above recalculates, for the moment you load the page, the Moon’s phase, the zodiac sign each of the ten classical and modern planets is currently passing through, the angles those planets form with one another, and the nearest upcoming sign changes. Nothing on it is pre-written: every number comes from an astronomical ephemeris computed at request time, the same approach described in more detail on our methodology page.
How to read today’s Moon phase
The Moon moves through eight named phases roughly every 29.5 days, from new moon to full moon and back again, as the angle between the Sun, Earth, and Moon changes. The Moon phase page names the current phase and shows when the next one begins. Many people use the new moon as a cue for setting intentions and the full moon as a natural point for reflection — a personal habit rather than a scientific claim.
How to read current planet signs
AstroNow uses the Western tropical zodiac and tracks all ten bodies from the Sun and Moon out to Pluto. Each moves at its own pace: the Moon changes sign every two to three days, the Sun about once a month, and the outer planets can stay in a single sign for years. The planet signs page also flags when a planet is retrograde — appearing to move backward through the zodiac, a visual effect of relative orbital speeds rather than an actual change of direction.
How to read current planetary aspects
An aspect is the angle between two planets as seen from Earth. AstroNow calculates the five classic aspects — conjunction, sextile, square, trine, and opposition — plus the minor quincunx, each allowed a small margin (the orb) around its exact angle. - What zodiac system does AstroNow use?
- The Western tropical zodiac, the system most Western astrologers use. It is fixed to the seasons — 0° Aries is defined by the March equinox — rather than to the visible constellations, which is why it differs from sidereal or Vedic zodiac systems.
- Does AstroNow calculate my personal birth chart?
- No. AstroNow shows the state of the sky right now, the same for every visitor — it is not an individual chart based on your birth date, time, and place. Think of it as a shared daily reference rather than a personal reading.
- Why does the Moon change sign so much more often than other planets?
- The Moon orbits the Earth in about 27–29 days, so it moves through all twelve zodiac signs roughly every month and changes sign every two to three days. The Sun takes about a month per sign, while outer planets like Saturn or Pluto can stay in one sign for years.
- What does "retrograde" mean on AstroNow?
- Retrograde describes a planet that appears to move backward through the zodiac from Earth's point of view. It is a visual effect caused by the relative orbital speeds of Earth and the other planet, not an actual reversal of the planet's orbit.
